Breakthrough Lipedema Treatment
Some women just can’t seem to lose weight even with an ideal regimen of diet & exercise. Until recently this has been a lingering mystery they have just had to live with. But there is an answer.
Rarely talked about, the disorder known as Lipedema has affected 17 million in the United States and 370 million worldwide. A vast majority of the individuals affected by this disorder are women.
This chronic disorder affects the legs and arms, causing an abnormal accumulation of fat cells and producing a noticeably disproportionate appearance. This condition not only causes emotional distress but is also very painful and potentially debilitating.
Lipedema is commonly misdiagnosed as weight gain or lymphedema. The diagnosis of lipedema has to be done on a clinical basis. Lipedema is categorized into 3 stages:
- Severe or Advanced
This disorder gives the individual a profound “tree-like” disproportion of the legs, where the fat fully encompasses the thighs, knees, calves and ankles. There is commonly a cuffing that occurs around the ankles that does not affect the feet. Lumpiness and cellulite are common characteristics that can occur. When the disorder gets to an advanced stage, there is a definite possibility the arms will also be affected. Pain, tenderness, decreased mobility, numbness, heaviness and easy bruising are symptoms or signs that many patients experience. Early diagnosis and treatment are important as it affects the long-term prognosis.
Lipedema strikes both thin and obese individuals alike, and generally no amount of diet or exercise can cease or prevent it. This disorder typically becomes present in an individual’s teenage years and then becomes progressively worse. However, Dr. David Amron, one of the finest best dermatologic surgeons with a specialty in liposuction, has found success for his patients through his specialized liposuction technique.
The Amron Approach to Treating Lipedema
Using a highly technical and customized method of body contouring, Dr. Amron has established the most effective Lipedema treatment known today. Surgical intervention by liposuction to remove the disproportionate fat storage tissue is the only recognized treatment that can truly alter the course of lipedema. Lymphatic sparing tumescent liposuction under local anesthetic is the recommended approach by Dr. Amron. You can see a perfect example of how Dr. Amron's approach can remedy this condition in Jasna's success story below.
"I was always an exceedingly happy and very active child. However, amidst the onset of puberty, I began to develop symptoms of what would later lead to decades of pain, misery, and immobility. I was one of the 11 percent of women worldwide suffering from lipedema.”
From the waist down, my skin's tissue was swelling and growing larger. As time went on and my condition worsened, exercise became impossibly painful. Eventually, it got to a point where I could no longer climb stairs without incredible difficulty, and simple, everyday tasks, such as sitting or standing for an extended period of time, only made matters worse. Because of this growing lack of mobility, my social life began to suffer as well. I could no longer enjoy lengthy lunches with my friends or participate in any sort of event or activity that required movement. Still, I had not seen the worst of it. During pre-menopause, my lipedema rapidly spiraled out of control and I was soon faced with losing what little mobility I had left. Doctors explained I would most likely need to be on disability and be bound to a wheelchair for the remainder of my life.
"Before meeting Dr. Amron, I was nearly immobile due to my lipedema. It affected me physically, socially, and mentally, and I was completely consumed in finding a solution to the condition. I was misdiagnosed countless times and spent more than 40 thousand dollars on treatments that didn’t work. Finally, I found Dr. Amron. His specialized procedure and technique completely changed my life. I am no longer facing life in a wheelchair, and am now living the active, healthy life I always dreamed of." Jasna Tursic, Actual Lipedema Patient
For more than a decade, I searched for an answer, a cure, for the symptoms causing my life to slip away from me. Initially, doctors assumed the swelling in my legs was a result of fluid coming from my veins. I underwent five different surgeries in hopes of change, but in each case was left disappointed. Later, I was misdiagnosed with a condition called lymphedema, which is caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system. For nearly 10 years, I suffered through countless treatments and therapies, none of which could mollify my symptoms. Finally, I found a physician in Utah, who claimed to have a working therapy for lipedema. Unfortunately, my insurance would not cover this treatment, so I was forced to pay out-of-pocket. In the end, I had spent more than $20,000 on treatments and machines that did not work. What's worse is many of the physicians I met had never even heard of lipedema. For the plastic surgeons who did know something of the condition, they refused to perform any surgery due to its risky nature.
Finally, after ample research, I found Dr. David Amron, a lipo-sculpture specialist with more than 20 years experience in his field. When I finally met with him regarding my own struggle, his unprecedented knowledge, confidence, and expertise in treating my condition immediately restored my hope of one day living a normal life again. Using his anesthesia-free pure tumescent liposuction and unique technique, he put an end to my lipedema symptoms once and for all. It was finally over.
It is hard to believe that after so many years of pain and struggle with lipedema, my life would change 110 percent over the course of just a few weeks. Today, I am able to exercise at the gym again, something that would have been completely impossible only a year prior. I no longer experience the frequent pain or social upsets because of the condition, and for the first time in a long time, I am living the active, healthy life I always dreamed of. After decades of letdowns, it would have been easy to believe I was destined to a life in a wheelchair. However, I did not take "no" for an answer. I fought to find the right diagnosis, and after that, fought even harder to find the right surgeon. I am now able to at long last return to my active, happy self.— Jasna Tursic, Actual Lipedema Patient
Evaluation / Consultation
Dr. Amron takes the evaluation and consultation process for liposuction surgery very seriously. This is both to determine who is truly a candidate for surgery and specifically where to target. For local patients living in Southern California, we strongly advise and encourage an in-person consultation with Dr. Amron. For patients outside of Southern California or outside the country, Dr. Amron offers a photo evaluation and phone consultation. For prospective patients (please see ‘Out of town patients’), blood work, possible medical clearance and preoperative details can be done from a distance and patients may arrive the day before the procedure and in most cases fly home 2 days later.
Dr. Amron’s Technique
All of Dr. Amron’s surgeries are performed in a fully licensed and fully accredited surgical center. Dr. Amron strongly prefers the approach of purely tumescent local anesthesia as opposed to general anesthesia and this is especially true for lipoedema patients as it is lymphatic tissue sparing. While most patients feel very little discomfort throughout the entire procedure, preoperative mild sedatives help reduce nervousness. The option of conscious sedation with an anesthesiologist exists but is rarely necessary. Most surgeries are between 1-3 hours depending on the surface area. The majority of patient areas can be done usually in one surgery. Sometimes a second surgery is necessary to target other areas and rarely a third surgery is needed if there are extensive areas involving the entire legs, arms, and torso. Time between surgeries is usually 2-7 days depending on the patient.
As Dr. Amron has always emphasized, the most important aspect to a great result is how well the liposculpture is performed and less about the tools or machines used. A perfect result is about the experience, judgment, skills and artistry of the surgeon. Dr. Amron has a unique 3-dimensional approach to all areas of the body in creating a balanced, proportionate natural result. He targets genetic disproportion in a precise way and contours and blends with the eyes and hands of an artist. Dr. Amron uses micro cannulas, lasers, power-assisted liposuction (PAL) and sometimes cellulaze to achieve the best possible result in every patient.
Immediately following the procedure, patients are milked of excess fluid, incision points are usually left to drain fluid and close within a few days. Patients are placed in a compression garment for 10-14 day full time and 10-14 days part time. Patients are placed on a mild antibiotic for five days. All patients are walking 30-60 minutes after the procedure and are encouraged to take a one to two mile walk the following day. Only about 10-15% of patients need any pain medications the evening of the surgery, and most patients have no to little bruising.
Dr. Amron encourages light exercise as early as 2 days after the procedure and most patients are able to resume full activity two weeks later. A post-operative check is done in the first week. For lipoedema patients the role of manual lymphatic drainage beginning several days after the surgery for several weeks is important to speed up the resolution of swelling. Most patients begin to see improvement cosmetically in several weeks, but final results are between 6-12 months.
The Team Approach
Although Dr. Amron is a specialist in complex liposuction surgery, with lipoedema patients there is usually more of a comprehensive approach to each individual patient that is necessary for optimal care. This involves a team of specialists including a Vodder trained MLD therapist, nutritional counseling, and hormonal evaluation. In most complicated cases possibly involving subsequent thigh or arm lifts, Dr. Amron works closely with board-certified plastic surgeons. Dr. Amron also has a close relationship with Dr. Karen Herbst who is a world renowned medical authority on fat disorders and lipoedema. Dr. Amron and Dr. Herbst work to establish pre and post-surgical protocols for lipoedema patients and consult with each other to optimize patient care.
